Desma 9 week 4 blog post: Art, Technology, and medicine

When I first learned about this, I remember watching the movie Soul Surfer, which is about the surfer Bethany Hamilton who lost her arm to a shark attack. The scene where she tries on the prosthetic limb is seen below. I remember being terrified when I first saw the arm when i was younger.

The future of prosthetics for people all throughout the world is brought into sharp focus by this relationship. It raises the question of when users of prosthetic limbs will be able to direct their limbs using their brains. Modern design has already made it possible for prosthetics to resemble the actual thing more closely, but when will technology improve the functionality of these prosthetics? I think a dramatic example of this is in the movie "I Robot," which shows how technology has already been used to mimic human activity. In the movie, it is the year 2035, and intelligent robots are starting to infiltrate civilization. These robots follow three laws to keep people safe. The main character, Will Smith, has a troubled background with robotics, but despite this, he starts looking into the advancement of robotics and how they fit into society—whether in a good or bad way.

When art and medical technology come together, it might benefit patients in hospitals, improve people's daily lives, or serve as an intriguing piece of art that raises important philosophical issues. In order to raise questions about topics like "what is beauty?" French artist ORLAN employed surgical performances to alter her face on the spot (The Art Story). Her procedures have changed how she looks, making her resemble other well-known artwork. "One operation changed her mouth to resemble François Boucher's Europa, another changed her forehead to resemble Leonardo's protruding brow in the Mona Lisa, and yet another changed her chin to resemble Botticelli's Venus," (Jeffries) writes. Here is an illustration of her work. Although I personally find her work disgusting I am amazed at the methods and techniques she employed to make a significant point about the relationship between art and surgery.
